Goals for the Generation IV energy systems

Before the Generation IV Technology Roadmap could been presented and concepts for R&D (research and development) been selected it had been necessary to define goals for new nuclear power systems. The goals had had to been established on purpose they should be criterions for R&D and to compare concepts, should stimulate innovative development, should give motivation and guidance for working efforts.

  • Sustainability 1 - Generation IV energy systems with fuel cycle would allow to sustainable electricity generation which would be environment safe and would be conducive for long term system operation and effective fuel use.
  • Sustainability 2 - Generation IV energy systems would be able to minimize amount of their nuclear wastes and ensure its good management. Moreover they would reduce need of waste's service thereby improving people and environment protection.
  • Safety & reliability 1 - Generation IV energy systems would be operating properly safe and reliable.
  • Safety & reliability 2 - Generation IV energy systems would have very low core accident risk.
  • Safety & reliability 3 - Generation IV energy systems would need no activity outside their area in case of any accident.
  • Proliferation Resistance & Physical Protection 1 - Generation IV energy systems and fuel cycle would discourage any diversion activity or theft attempts on purpose getting potential nuclear bombs-usable materials. Additionally systems would provide any terrorist attack protection.
  • Economics 1 - Generation IV energy systems fuel cycle would be less expensive than other energy sources.
  • Economics 2 - Generation IV energy systems would equalize their financial investment risk with other energy systems.
