Generation III

APR 1400 reactor

APR is Korean reactor derived from System 80+ reactor - technology owned by Westinghouse today. APR is evolution from mention design in principle. It is 1455 MWe, reactor with 55 GWd/t burn-up and 60 years service time. In comparison to System 80+, APR1400 has improved safety systems and is more resistant to seismic shocks. The reactor uses fuel with burnable poisons, what is gen III feature, but it is not gen III+ design with passive safety.

First two reactors are in build in ShinKori 3,4 nuclear power plant and are to come on line in 2013. Further reactors will be building in United Arab Emirates, where APR1400 was chosen as the basis unit. Build duration time is 48 months.

Although the Korean Institute of Nuclear Safety granted certificate in 2003, design is not certified anywhere outside South Korea. US licencing is scheduled on 2012 but there is no action to meet EUR requirements. There are only plans for EU-APR1400 and improved to gen III+ standard APR+ 1550 MWe.

For this design low speed turbine is needed. [35],[36],[37],[46]
