TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS

Transmission and distribution system (T&D) transmit the electric power from generators to the loads. They include high and low voltage lines, cables, substations etc. and its task is to move power from generation plants to the end users. However, some of the energy supplied by the generators is lost while it passes through the T&D system and, generally speaking, losses between 6-8% are considered normal. There are, however, countries such as Finland where losses are about 3% [7] and Poland with high 10%, not mentioning third world countries for example Haiti with 54% where large part of the losses is caused by thievery. This is why suitable measures to improve the efficiency of T&D should be initiated and following on that less primary energy will be used to feed the same level of load demands.
